A French priest and former surgeon working for the Pontifical Council for the Family recently published a study that claims that the use of condoms to prevent the spread of AIDS is essentially a game of Russian roulette.
Father Jacques Suaudeau’s 37-page report, Safe Sex and the Condom : Faced with the Challenge of AIDS, has stirred controversy since its appearance in Medicina e Morale, an Italian journal published by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome.
Father Suaudeau, who worked as a surgeon in France and medical researcher in the United States before ordination, based his conclusions on some 136 different studies concerning condoms, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. « The epidemiological studies show that the condom certainly gives protection against contamination by the virus, but that this protection is far from absolute, » he wrote.
« The possibility of contracting HIV using a condom during high-risk sexual relations stands at an average of 15-16 percent. » Father Suaudeau said the risk rises to 20-30 percent when the act is homosexual, when sexual promiscuity is high and when another sexually transmitted disease is involved.
(…)
His arguments are based not on theology but on reams of scientific research — including studies showing that condom use does not significantly lower the rate of sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia.
(…)
While prophylactic companies promise that the microscopic pores in condoms don’t allow the transmission of the virus, Father Suaudeau said their testing was not sufficient. « If you want to do real tests, you have to use microspheres, something the size of the virus, » he explained. « Mechanical tests are not enough. » He pointed out that medical technicians dealing with substances containing HIV have been told to wear two pairs of gloves, one on top of the other.
(…)
In his study, Father Suaudeau points out the multiple weaknesses of prophylactics one by one. The failure of condoms in preventing pregnancy (defined as the probability of pregnancy in the course of a year for a woman who relies only on condoms for contraception) is between 5-30 percent, with an average of 15 percent.
Father Suaudeau also looked at 19 different studies on the effectiveness of condoms on populations at risk in different parts of the globe, concluding that they reduce the risk of HIV transmission somewhat. But in 10-15 percent of all sexual acts, condoms fail to prevent the transmission of the AIDS causing virus.
He looked at the overall AIDS figures in France, where 6000 new AIDS cases are diagnosed each year, and concluded that the promotion of condoms has done little to stop the deadly problem. « Despite strong campaigns in favor of condoms in the United States, France and the rest of Europe, there has been a continual increase in the number of AIDS cases in these countries since 1981, » he wrote.
(…)
Father Suaudeau concludes that using condoms to prevent AIDS is like playing Russian roulette : « The more someone multiplies his sexual experiences, convinced of the impunity given him by condoms, the greater the probability of contamination, » he wrote. « In the end, it’s HIV that wins. »

Outre les risques évidents de déchirure et de fuite, il est important de savoir que les pores des condoms en latex sont cinquante fois plus grands que la taille des virus porteurs du Sida :
Experts from the Centers for Disease Control, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratories and the American Journal of Nursing revealed that the holes in a standard latex condom are 5 microns in diameter, a males sperm is 45 microns and the HIV virus is only 0.1 micron. In other words, HIV is three times smaller than the herpes virus, 60 times smaller than the spirochetes which causes syphilis, 450 times smaller than sperm and 50 times smaller than the holes in a latex condom. Therefore, condoms are not as safe as what they are made out to be.

En Afrique, la promotion de l’abstinence et de la monogamie a réussi à freiner l’épidémie de Sida :
While condoms clearly won’t solve the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa (or anywhere else), there is an approach that will : abstinence. Indeed, in African nations — where HIV/AIDS is transmitted almost exclusively through sexual contact — abstinence is the obvious solution. And better yet, it has been proven effective.
Uganda at one time had the highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the world. Starting in the mid to late 1980s, their government instituted a program to teach abstinence before marriage and fidelity to one’s partner afterwards. (…) Billboards, radio announcements, print ads, and school programs all promoted the virtues of abstinence and fidelity to prevent HIV/AIDS. The results were astonishing.
In 1991, the prevalence rate of HIV was 15%. By 2001, it had dropped to 5%. It was the biggest HIV infection reduction in world history. Among pregnant women, the drop was even more dramatic (as reported by CNS News, January 13, 2003). In 1991, 21.2% of expecting mothers tested positive for HIV. By 2001, the number had plummeted to 6.2%. Compare this with the 2001 numbers from Kenya (15%), Zimbabwe (32%), and Botswana (38%). All three countries focus on condom distribution, and all three countries continue to see their rates rise.
But wait, the condom advocates object. The Ugandan « miracle » is simply the result of more widespread condom use. Not so, says Dr. Edward C. Green, an anthropologist at the Harvard University School of Public Health, who was a strong proponent of condom distribution to stem HIV/AIDS. That is, until the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) hired him to study the reasons behind the success in Uganda.
The results of his research left him little doubt. « Reduction in the number of sexual partners was probably the single most important behavioral change that resulted in prevalence decline, » he noted. « Abstinence was probably the second most important change » (testimony before the Subcommittee on African Affairs, as reported by Joseph Loconte). « It is a very indicting statement about the effectiveness of condoms, » he told Citizen Magazine. « You cannot show that more condoms have led to less AIDS in Africa. »
